Make the Season Special

Lent is here!

It’s the time of year ushered in by the putting of a cross of ash on our foreheads – reminding us of something very essential.  Our lives on earth are fleeting.  At the end of our days, we return to the earth, becoming dust.

Whether we like it or not, only our souls will live on in immortal life or death.  Lent gives us a chance to stop and think about our mortality as well as our eternal calling.

Lent turns us away from our busyness and self-centered existence and turns us toward Christ.  Christ, who, every day and every moment of His life, lived out of His love for us – so we can have the divine life!

The 40 days of Lent prepare us for Easter!  Jesus died in our place so we could rise with Him!

If we were going on a journey, wouldn’t we need to prepare for our clothing, food and drink… where we will stay and who will we bring with us?  We find things to bring and things to leave behind as we cannot pack in everything.

Lent is that preparation time.  It is the time when we look in the mirror, hold up the garment of righteousness and our acts of penitence serve to don it so we can stand in God’s presence.

We also do away with many things that weigh us down – not only do we try to give up some kind of attachment like soft drinks or cigarettes or chocolate, but even more significantly, we throw away the darkness within ourselves such as unforgiveness, bitterness, resentments, hopelessness, pride, lust, greed and you can add the rest.

It’s not always easy to go on a journey alone.  Here are the vehicles that will get us more safely, more hastily there!  Here are some ways to make the season so special and meaningful.  All of the following are free to join (except for the Tagaytay retreat, details at the bottom of the article).

Sacred Space‘s online retreat will help us reflect on Jesus’ 7 Last Words.  This is based on the book of Fr. James Martin.

St. Paul Center presents “Deepen your Understanding of the Sacraments”.  Their bible studies are always well presented coupled with excellent visualizations.

Go through this practical Lenten Recollection answering one of the most basic questions in life.

We don’t just tone our bodies and muscles but more importantly, we are to be spiritually fit for the fight!  This Ignatian Online Retreat is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

A Lenten Journey reflection by Sarah Philips on Lent and how it may be your least favorite time of year.

Pope Francis gives us 10 tips on what we should do for Lent.

Everyone is also welcome to join all of these Lenten events!

All college students are welcome to the Christ’s Youth in Action talk on redefining God.  It will be held at the the Quezon City Youth Center,  (2nd floor, Elizabeth Hall, beside Diligence Cafe).

Open to all.

“As you mourn for your sins and weaknesses this Ash Wednesday through fasting, mourning and weeping, may you be truly transformed from your heart.” — John Tribes

A NOTE TO OUR READERS: We at Papemelroti believe that we can only have fullness and abundance of life if we live the life God has meant for us to live.  We love to share our faith with all of our readers in the hope that you experience God’s immeasurable, boundless and unconditional love for you and that your joy may be complete!

Desktop Garden Doggy

“To plant a garden
is to believe
in tomorrow.”
– Audrey Hepburn

Sage.  Chartreuse.  Lime. Pine.  Crocodile.  Juniper.  What do all of these have in common?  They’re all shades of green.  There is something about seeing a mild palette of mint hues that instantly soothes.  Just like tired eyes are refreshed by looking out at the sky, seeing green is instantly calming.  Some therapists wrap green scarves around trauma victims to relax them.

As the weather turns warm and the sun seemingly starts to shine all the more brighter, now is the time to dabble in micro-gardening.  If in the past you’ve experienced zero survival rates in caring for plants then this is another chance for you to succeed!!!  All it takes is 3-4 days!

Our new desktop garden brings the outdoors into your desk.  Put this on your office table and look at it when you’re feeling stressed.  Just seeing the miraculous buds come to life will make your day!  One must try it to believe it.

Here’s how…

1 – Have some Mung Beans (or “Monggo”) ready along with tissue paper and water.

2 – Assemble like the picture above and put about 2-3 TBSP of water – just enough for everything to get wet.

3 – Look for a shady place (still with a bit of sun) where the seeds can grow steadily.

4 – Wait and watch!  Remember not to be overeager and fiddle around with this.  Just leave it alone for the seeds to grow.  Try this with other types of seeds too and tell us how it went!

The Desktop Garden is a wonderful gift idea.  Have the doggy bring a note or hold a little umbrella (when it’s pouring outside maybe?).

Career Advice from Above

You’re a fresh new graduate with the whole world before you!  You have dreams of a blossoming career, prestige and a good foundation to start a family later on in life.  Are you filled with excitement, anxiety or blahs?

Or maybe you are taking a break or resigned from your first job and still trying to figure out where your true place in the sun is?

What determines which job you will pursue?

“I’ll take the first job that hires me.”
“I’ll take the highest paying job.”
“I’ll take the job my parents want for me.”
“I’ll take the job that’s closest to home.”
“I’ll take the job that allows me to travel.”
“I’ll take the job I enjoy the most.”
“I’ll take any job!”

Which of the above statements sounds like you?

Pursuing your dreams don’t come with step by step manuals. There are a lot of roads that we can take to get there.  Along the way, we can get discouraged if we don’t really know where we are going, or even where we want to go.

Here is where we turn to the One who knows us the best, and who wants to give us the BEST LIFE!

Everyone wants a life of fullness and abundance.  So how do we get it?

There was a young lady who was planning to be a teacher once she graduated.  But after some mishaps at school, ended up as a housewife instead.  As time passed, the desire in her heart grew – and she prayed to the Lord for a business.  That is the story of Mrs. Socorro Alejandro, the founder of Papemelroti.

She only wanted a place where she could sell her crafts and could never have pictured a business which has touched the lives of countless Filipinos.

Sometimes our plans are not God’s plans for us.  So we need to do the first step – to commit our future to the Lord.  We may not see it at first but God always keeps His promises and He will establish our feet in a solid career.

Dedicating your work to the Lord does not mean leaving it all to Him and not lifting an inch.  We are responsible for our future and we need to pray, reflect, know ourselves and our gifts and talents as well as our weaknesses so we can make the best decisions.  At no point must we twiddle our thumbs and be lazy.  Chasing fantasies will get us nowhere.  See the bible verse below.

So we know that the road to a successful career or business is to let God be your working “partner”.  Don’t leave Him out of the picture.  We also know that it takes hard work to get to where we want to be in life.  Then what?

Sometimes people are afraid of giving their lives to the Lord for fear He will make them monks or ask them to give away everything (which is not all that impossible) – but they fail to see that God is the one who gives us great dreams.  He places seeds of greatness in our hearts so we can pursue them and do mighty deeds in the world!

We need not fear what He will tell us when we listen.  Whatever our deepest, most authentic selves long for, God is speaking through those desires.  Let’s not ignore them!

Most of all, let us not allow doubts or discouragements to dwell in our thoughts.  Remember that you can do ALL THINGS, through Christ who strengthens you! (Philippians 4:13)  Did you get that?  ALL THINGS!  Not just some things, not just the usual things!  But ALL THINGS!

Once you have rid yourself of all negativity, now is the time to act!

Get your resume ready!  Join job fairs!  Ask around for the best job opportunities!  Research!  There are a multitude of resources available to us now in the information age compared to decades ago!

If you don’t get the job of your dreams at first, don’t give up!  Keep at it while you hone your skills and learn all you can from other jobs.   Along the way, you’ll find out what your purpose and mission in life is!

Finally, in all that you do, know and claim God’s promises for you!  He said that He will instruct us and teach us in the way we should go.  If we keep ourselves free from the love of money, power, fame, we will not crowd out the voice of God speaking to our hearts.  Isn’t it exciting that the Maker of the universe wants to guide us in the way we should go?

We at papemelroti pray that your way will be blessed!  We wish you all the joy!  May you find the job that you love – so you don’t have to work a day in your life!
